• Iowa kayaker paddles East Nishnabotna River establishing record time and testing water quality (3newsnow.com) — An Iowa kayaker launched from Atlantic to paddle the full East Nishnabotna River to Brownville, Nebraska, setting a record time while testing surface water for nitrates along the way. Partnering with Nitrate Watch volunteers, he gathered data near towns like Elliott and hopes his journey inspires more people to explore and help protect local waterways.
   

• School Bus Safety Violators Could Pay a Hefty Fine (westerniowatoday.com) — With school buses rolling again, an Iowa State Patrol trooper speaking from Atlantic is reminding drivers to stop at least 15 feet away when red lights and stop arms are out, or face steep fines and license suspensions. Cameras on buses help identify violators, and convictions for failing to stop have risen statewide over the past two years.
   

• Glen Smith Sworn in as Under Secretary for Rural Development (farms.com) — An Atlantic resident, Glen R. Smith, has been sworn in as the USDA's Under Secretary for Rural Development, bringing a southwest Iowa farm background to a national leadership role. Federal and Iowa leaders say his experience in agricultural lending and rural life will shape efforts to strengthen rural economies across the country, including communities like Atlantic.
