Freshmen can retake the 127-question multiple-choice test as often as needed to reach 60 percent, and even current seniors must pass this year, with accommodations planned for special education students.

Burlington Mayor Jon Billups says he's confident a proposed 15-billion-dollar steel plant will be built in Lee County, despite questions about the project (kbur.com) — A proposed $15 billion steel plant in nearby Lee County could bring thousands of construction and permanent jobs that Burlington’s mayor believes will significantly benefit local workers and businesses. He says the project’s river, rail, and highway access favor the region but warns Burlington must prepare for added pressure on housing, hotels, roads, and infrastructure as lawmakers adjust Iowa’s MEGA incentives program.

3. Southeast Iowa Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison in Burlington Shooting Death (ottumwaradio.com) — A Mount Pleasant man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a fatal March 7 shooting at a Burlington bar that killed a 19-year-old woman. A jury downgraded the original murder charge to voluntary manslaughter and related offenses, and a South Lee County judge also ordered $150,000 restitution to the victim’s family.

Prep volleyball: West Burlington knocks off SEISC foe Central Lee (mississippivalleypublishing.com) — West Burlington High School’s volleyball team stayed perfect in SEI Super Conference South Division play by sweeping Central Lee on Thursday, notching their 20th win of the season. Strong serving from eighth-grader Kiana O’Brien and heavy hitting from Kaylee Webb and teammates powered the Falcons, who now head to a crucial division-title showdown at Holy Trinity on Tuesday night.
