1. Cedar Crossing Casino announces space exhibit, expanded entertainment lineup (cbs2iowa.com) — Cedar Rapids residents will soon get a new casino, concert venue, and hands-on space exhibit as the $275 million Cedar Crossing complex prepares to open along the Cedar River in mid-November. Its Compass Center will debut the interactive "Astronaut" exhibit, with free admission for Linn County school field trips, and a slate of concerts and comedy shows is scheduled through mid-2027.
2. Iowa City man serving time at Cedar Rapids halfway house charged with assault (1630kcjj.com) — A resident of a Cedar Rapids halfway house, the Lary Nelsen Center, has been charged with assault after another resident reported threats and showed staff injuries backed up by security footage. The 29-year-old Iowa City man, already convicted of prior assaults, was returned to Johnson County Jail and barred from returning to the Cedar Rapids facility under a keep-separate order.
3. Rep. Miller-Meeks pens letter to DHS asking for Iowa City woman's release (kcrg.com) — A Cedar Rapids ICE detention facility is at the center of efforts to stop the deportation of Iowa City resident Fatou Traore, a mother of four with legal withholding of removal status. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has written and called Homeland Security's secretary seeking a stay, while hundreds recently gathered at a local church to support Traore's return.
4. Iowa.man who threatened "baptism by blood" sentenced (kimt.com) — In Cedar Rapids, a federal judge has sentenced a Tama County man to 78 months in prison after he posted gun photos online and threatened a violent "baptism by blood" at a community event. Investigators seized seven firearms, including an AK-47-style rifle, and the 42-year-old will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.
