The University of Northern Iowa will host a junior lifeguarding class for youth ages 11 through 14, from Monday, July 22, throughWednesday, July 24.
The class will provide a foundation in aquatics and leadership knowledge, along with skills for future successful completion of American Red Cross lifeguarding courses. The class will focus on prevention of accidents, fitness, rescue responses, leadership and professionalism.
Participants are required to pass a swim test, which consists of a 25-yard front crawl that displays proper breathing technique; a 25-yard elementary backstroke; a 30-secound back float; treading water for one minute; and swimming 10 feet underwater without surfacing. The test will be given at the start of class Monday.
