Cedar Falls and Waterloo have both been selected as demonstration communities in the Blue Zones initiative. A commemorative event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, on the south side of Maucker Union on the University of Northern Iowa campus. The event will include informational and interactive tables with games and activities to promote awareness of healthy habits. The event is free and open to the public.
Elisa Cohen, a UNI graduate student in the School of Health Physical Education and Leisure Services, has been assigned to coordinate and implement the efforts. The cities will receive assistance and resources to expand opportunities that promote healthy lifestyle choices, such as continued development of trails, parks and recreational activities.
"The Blue Zones Project is providing each of us the knowledge and tools to take easy, simple steps that can make our whole community a happier, healthier place to live," said Cohen. "This means more opportunities and an enhanced physical, emotional and spiritual health for everyone in our community."
