Gallup-Healthways has released its 2012 rankings for the Well-Being Index, the official measurement tool of Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative. According to Gallup-Healthways, Iowa now ranks 9th in overall well-being, up seven spots from its 16th ranking for 2011. (In 2010, Iowa ranked 19th.)
“A preliminary review of the data suggests that Iowa’s biggest improvement in 2012 was in the area of Work Environment, one of six sub-indexes in the Well-Being Index,” says Helen Eddy, Executive Director of the Healthiest State Initiative.
While Iowa has moved into the top 10 in rankings, Eddy says there is still considerable work to be done. Five work groups have been established to address key opportunity areas across the Well-Being Index domains including nutrition, oral health, lifelong learning, reducing tobacco use and improving workplace well-being.

“We are proud of the progress and the larger cultural shift we are seeing among Iowans.” Eddy reports. “Iowans have embraced our challenge, and the momentum we are seeing will only help us in our efforts to become number one in well-being.”
