Blue Zones® Home Checklist: Health and Wellness Blog

Did you know that by moving naturally-standing, walking and talking-we can burn up to 350 more calories each day?

According to Blue Zones Projects, gadgets & gizmos designed to make our lives easier engineered much of the physical activity out of our lives. This translates into Americans burning 120-140 calories less each day or 12-15 fewer pounds each year! The original Blue Zones® environments are designed to encourage movement without them even thinking about it. Research shows that by moving naturally-standing, walking and talking-we can burn up to 350 more calories each day. The Blue Zones® Home Checklist will help you evaluate your current living environment and suggest some simple changes for a bigger impact on your health over time. To download Blue Zones Home Checklist: Log-in to www.bluezonesproject.com, click here, Choose Habitat, Scroll down to find the Home Checklist, Click Pledge To Do This, and download the Blue Zones Home Checklist as indicated by the arrows below. I noticed that I disagreed with a handful of the suggestions based on my personality, my family, my physical abilities, etc. Fortunately, I also found some great, easy suggestions including one that I have already incorporated in my life: push mowing the lawn. I welcome most activities that allow me to exercise, complete a chore, pray, and get my vitamin D all at the same time :). I miss mowing this summer because of our drought so I looked for other ways to exercise outdoors – walks with friends, bike rides with my husband, planks on my patio. Since most outdoor movement this summer has resulted in a lot of sweat, my husband and I have made sure to rehydrate and replace those electrolytes we lost in a natural way – just like many of the RAGBRAI riders this week. Considering I may not have the chance to mow again for a while, I would love your suggestions for fun ways to move naturally outdoors.
