Can Thanksgiving Make Us Older? Health and Wellness Blog
Stress, sugar, fat, artificial flavors and colors, alcohol, smoke, etc. Would you like to know how to promote healthy aging in this complex holiday season?

Shaklee reminds us that Thanksgiving is just around the corner!
The official start of the holiday season: the time of year when life gets more stressful, and we tend to overindulge in high-sugar, high-fat, and artificially flavored and colored foods. We drink more alcohol than we should. And we’re exposed to an extra load of environmental toxins: smoke in our fireplaces; cigar smoke at parties; artificial fragrances at the mall; and exhaust fumes from sitting in holiday traffic.
It’s enough to make you feel older than you really are! Dr. Jamie McManus, Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education for the Shaklee Corporation, explains how it’s never too late to change lifestyle habits that promote healthy aging: balanced diet, healthy weight, regular exercise, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B, antioxidants, and resveratrol.

As I shared with a couple friends today, I have the most success when I take baby steps to reach my goals. Dr. Jamie just gave us a long list, so please join me in picking a place to start, our first baby step.
Since I know the unhealthy foods will tempt me during the holiday season, I will start with that balanced diet. With my love of food, I still have to plan how much unhealthy food I get at each event before I grab a plate if I want any hope of that balanced diet. For me, that means mostly protein and veggies plus ONE BITE of any of the bad stuff that looks too yummy to resist. If I need extra support, I tell my husband my intentions and ask him to hold me accountable – backup will-power =).
