Free Memberships to Online Library Helps U.S. Educators Bridge School-to-Home Reading Connection for Students with Print Disabilities

Educators..give U.S. students with qualified print disabilities free digital books and reading technologies through a free, federally funded online library.

Today, more than 72,000 U.S. educators use a free, online library, Bookshare, to bridge the school-to-home reading connection for students with qualified print disabilities.

Students who use Bookshare become independent readers and are more equipped to study at home, at school and on the go!

Any U.S. school can sign up for Organization Membership at no cost.

Use the service to comply with IDEA 2004 law which mandates curriculum delivery in accessible formats (audio, digital, braille and large print) to support students who are blind, have low vision, a physical disability or severe reading disability, like dyslexia. 

Find K-12 textbooks, classics, encyclopedias, poetry, best sellers, and periodicals. Over 166,000 titles!  Discover what a digital book is and how students react to them at these video links:

  • Fun musical video, “What Am I” about a digital book. 
  • Alex, an 8th grader describes reading digital books for school. 
  • Rushelle, a senior talks about reading failure and now above grade-level work
  • Bookshare ebooks are read aloud with computers and reading software, on Apple or Android tablets with reading apps like Read2Go, smart phones, MP3 players, braille devices and assistive technology. Some technologies are also free to download.
