Here we go again - another summer and another spike in fuel prices. Follow these tips for more miles per gallon.

Here we go again - another summer and another spike in fuel prices. And while you might not be able to control the prices, you can control how you drive. Following these tips will help you get more miles out of every gallon you pump.

1. Take It Easy

Quick starts and abrupt stops waste fuel - it’s as simple as that. The Department of Energy reported that aggressive driving reduces gas mileage by an astounding 33% on the highway & 5% in the city.

2. Use The Cruise

It's no secret that cruise control makes the ride more enjoyable. But did you know that it helps conserve fuel in two ways?

Find out what's happening in Cedar Fallsfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

1. It controls your maximum speed

2. It maintains a constant speed so you won’t be pumping extra fuel in your engine.

3. Watch Your Speed

It’s clear that when driving speeds over 50 mph, your vehicle uses more fuel than it does at 40 mph. Bud did you know that going from 55 to 65 increases fuel consumption by 10-15 percent? And increasing from 55 to 70 increases that number to 25 percent? So, take care to obey all posted speed limits and keep your speed in check.

4. Get In & Go

Letting the engine idle - to heat up or cool down - wastes gas. The Department of Energy advises that idling can burn a quarter to half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and if the A/C is on. Plus, your vehicle will heat up or cool down faster when you drive it.

5. Plan Your Trip
