Make Your Kitchen Work For You: Health and Wellness Blog

Did you know that making small changes to the way your kitchen is setup and changing the way you store and access your food can help you stop "mindlessly" eating?

According to Blue Zones, Cornell University's Dr. Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, has found that making small changes to the way your kitchen is setup and changing the way you store and access your food can help you stop "mindlessly" eating...mindlessly! The Blue Zones® Kitchen Checklist is designed to give you the skinny on your current kitchen, and then show you how to make simple, inexpensive changes for the better. And, the ideas are not major leaps - they are easy things like dedicating the top shelf of your refrigerator to fruits and vegetables, using hand operated kitchen appliances instead of electric, putting a fruit filled bowl on your countertop, and pre-plating your food instead of serving family-style. Now how easy is that!

To make my kitchen even more supportive of healthy eating, I do not buy food I do not consider healthy. To keep that from feeling depriving, I stock my kitchen with organic nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables, yummy tasting forms of protein. I have found that the more I eat these foods, the more I like them! As long as I eat small meals throughout the day, I do not usually get hungry and go wandering :). If I do get the munchies, I do not worry because I only have healthy options. I have enough opportunities at events and restaurants for more variety and small splurges so I strive to keep my kitchen a safe place.
