Right Tribe: The Seventh Habit for a Blue Zone Lifestyle: Health and Wellness Blog

Did you know that proactively surrounding yourself with the right friends, will do more to add years to your life than just about anything else?

How did you get your antioxidants and fellowship last week? We enjoyed four days of wedding activities plus a family morning at the City Museum in St. Louis – tons of fellowship, and exercise.

This week I want to focus on the seventh healthy habit from the Power 9™: move naturally, know your purpose, down shift, 80% rule, plant slant, wine at 5, right tribe, community, loved ones first.

According to Blue Zones Project, the world's longest-lived people are either born into or choose to create social circles that support healthy behaviors. Ikarians enjoy tight-knit communities that socialize frequently, while Okinawans build "moai" groups of five friends that commit to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness and even loneliness are contagious. Assessing who you hang out with, and then proactively surrounding yourself with the right friends, will do more to add years to your life than just about anything else.

I love thinking of happiness as contagious. Luckily, most positive emotions and habits also catch easily. Over the past year, I have started reviewing my activities (and the people involved) to increase the positive aspects of my life and decrease the negative aspects. I know that the more I surround myself with the characteristics I value, the more I become the person I want to be – the person I feel called to be. That, in turn, will attract more people with those admirable, desirable traits. My church and business activities have blessed me with a right tribe which encourages me to nurture that same positive energy in all aspects of my life.
