Winter Weather Preparedness: Health and Wellness Blog

Have you ever gotten stuck in the snow or snowed in the house? See if you have a complete winter preparedness plan.

My weather radio just alerted me to a winter storm warning in Iowa, so I thought these tips from The Weather Channel would help all of us have a safer (and therefore healthier) holiday season and winter. I see a couple items I still need to check off my list, specifically the family preparedness plan. As I look through the emergency supply kit, it reminds me of our camping checklist :).

The list for this kit even mentions babies, pets, vitamins, and family documents specifically. I also noticed a couple surprising supplies such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and whistle, so I encourage you to review the ideas below to make sure you have all you need for an emergency too.

  • Pay attention to local weather reports.
  • Develop a Family Preparedness Plan that includes deciding where to go if at home, school, work, outdoors, or in a car when a winter storm warning is issued.
  • Your Family Emergency Supplies Kit.
  • Set up emergency heating equipment, such as a fireplace with wood or coal or a camp stove with fuel.
  • Be sure you know the proper usage and provide proper ventilation for space heaters.
  • Insulate pipes with layers of insulation or newspaper wrapped with plastic. Let faucets drip and learn how to shut off water valves.
