City Council Votes Not to Discuss Part-Time Mayor Proposal

The Cedar Falls City Council has voted to table the issue of transitioning to a part-time mayor - meaning they won't discuss the City Budget Task Forces's proposal, at least for now.

In May, the Budget Task Force recommended moving to a part-time mayor who would oversee a full-time city administrator. The recommendation was proposed as a cost-saving measure as the city looks to forestall potential future budget shortfalls.

A motion in a City Council Committee of the Whole meeting to discuss the issue at a city council meeting Monday was defeated 5-2.

Council members Frank Darrah and Nick Taiber voted in favor of discussion.

Instead, the council voted to consider an alternative plan proposed by Mayor Jon Crews. That plan would keep a full-time mayor but more clearly define the mayor's role. It would also transitions the city's Administrative Services Director job to a City Administrator position, among other structural changes.

The mayor's proposed ordinance will be placed on the city council agenda for an upcoming meeting.
