Guest presenter, Ann Byle, will speak on the world of publishing, provide journalism tips, and explain the role of an agent in your writing career. As a judge for several prominent writing contests and a literary agent, Byle will offer advice to help writers reach readers and impress agents, editors and publishers. She is a literary agent with Credo Communications and author or co-author of several books including “The Making of a Christian Best Seller.”
Shelly Beach, co-founder of the Cedar Falls Christian Writers Workshop, will cover the topics of writing devotionals, working with editors and writing proposals. Beach speaks across the nation at conferences, seminars and retreats on writing, care-giving and spiritual formation. She is an award-winning author of seven books, including “Hallie’s Heart,” which won a 2008 Christy Award.
Cedar Falls resident and award-winning author, Jocelyn Greene will share tips on how to avoid common mistakes that novelists make. And for the time-starved writers, she will share advice on maximizing your productivity. Green is the author of multiple books, including “Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives” and two Civil War novels “Wedded to War” and “Widow of Gettysburg.”
Byle, Beach and Green share the podium with seven other speakers who will present sessions for both novice and seasoned writers. Sessions include how and when to create an online marketing kit, common mistakes that novelists make and how to avoid them, tips for time-starved writers, how to create realistic characters, how to build your platform, setting as an integral part of fiction, Google Docs for writers, memory triggers for writing your memoirs, and online book studies and discussion groups.
Vince Gotera, professor of creative writing and poetics at the University of Northern Iowa, will be the featured speaker at the Friday evening banquet. He has published two collections of poetry “Dragonfly” and “Fighting Kite.” He has also published “Radical Visions: Poetry by Vietnam Veterans,” a book of literary criticism.
Early-bird tuition is $235 until April 15 and $255 starting April 16. Tuition includes all meals and snacks except for the banquet on Friday evening. Tuition includes a 20-minute consultation with one of the speakers.
A limited number of attendees may receive an in-depth manuscript critique with one of the speakers for an additional cost of $35. Manuscripts are limited to ten pages and must be submitted before May 10. Registration for the entire conference is required.
