Lavelle's speech will focus on the implications of statements that frame the athletic abilities of women in masculine terms, and explore why those statements are still used. Her talk will use the example of Brittney Griner, a 6 foot, 8 inches basketball star on Baylor University’s Women’s Basketball team. Since the beginning of her collegiate career, Griner has been one of the best players in the game. However, despite her on-court success, Griner's femininity has been consistently scrutinized in the press and by fans.
