Surgeon Dies While Swimming at Waterloo Country Club
Dr. Deniz Bastug, 51, of Waterloo, died while swimming at Sunnyside Country Club.

A local surgeon died while swimming at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo Tuesday afternoon.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported Deniz Bastug, 51, was swimming when he appeared in distress and slipped under water. A lifeguard pulled him from the water. CPR was performed and paramedics took him to Covenant Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead.
Bastug, a plastic surgeon, was the surgeon for Renaissance Plastic Surgery in Waterloo. He operated at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo and in Cedar Falls.

According to Renaissance's website, Bastug was born in New York City and grew up in West Virginia. After graduating from medical school at West Virginia University, he completed his general surgery residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia. He completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
He was a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with a specialty certificate in Pediatric Plastic Surgery from Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D. C.

According to his Facebook page, he was married to Diane Bastug.
