1. DMPS welcomes new school year with middle school construction and expansion (who13.com) — Families in Des Moines Public Schools will see major construction at Brody, Goodrell, McCombs, Weeks and a temporary move for Moulton Elementary students to Kurtz Opportunity Center on the south side. New maker spaces and a future signature school are coming, but parents should watch for changes in parking, pickup and dropoff routines this year and next.
2. Missing Des Moines River boater identified, still not located (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — Local crews from Des Moines and nearby departments have suspended active searching for a Windsor Heights man who went overboard in the Des Moines River on Saturday and remains missing. The search focused near NW Morningstar Drive and NW 45th Place in Saylor Township, where deputies used drones and multiple fire departments assisted while authorities expressed support for the man's family and friends.
3. 11,000 pounds of food donated by Iowa State Fair vendors (who13.com) — Des Moines-based Food Bank of Iowa just received 11,000 pounds of leftover food from Iowa State Fair vendors, nearly doubling last year's haul. Much of the perishable food went straight to the Des Moines metro on Monday, while remaining items will help feed people across the 55 counties the food bank serves.
4. Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences Student Receives 2026 CVS Caring Heart Scholarship (rcreader.com) — A Des Moines University physician assistant student has earned a $10,000 CVS Caring Hearts Scholarship, highlighting local training for future health care providers. Bryn Miller was recognized for her academic strength and extensive community service, and says the award will help her continue advanced studies aimed at improving care in underserved communities, including rural Iowa.
5. Iowa reports 17 measles cases, adds Bloomfield exposure location (cbs2iowa.com subscription) — Health officials have identified several measles exposure sites in the Des Moines metro, including Menards in Des Moines and businesses in Clive and West Des Moines, tied to a growing southern Iowa outbreak. With 17 cases confirmed statewide, residents who visited listed locations on the specified dates are urged to monitor for symptoms and check their vaccination status with a healthcare provider.
