Today's riddle: What has a neck but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Cities grapple with uncertainty and concern as they gear up for budget season under new property tax law (iowapublicradio.org) — Des Moines is staring down a $12 million budget shortfall and may cut about 40 full-time positions, raise fees, and scale back park services because of Iowa's new property tax law. Cities across the Des Moines metro and statewide, from Pleasant Hill to Waukee and Newton, are weighing hiring freezes, reduced library hours, and new fees as they brace for long-term revenue limits.
2. Des Moines University Clinic Welcomes First Psychology Intern (rcreader.com) — Des Moines residents now have another option for adult mental-health care, as Des Moines University Clinic has welcomed its first psychology intern and is accepting new patients. The one-year internship expands behavioral health services, adds new therapy groups, and helps train psychologists to stay and practice in Iowa. Adults can call the clinic directly to schedule appointments.
3. Evelyn K. Davis Center director Eric Idehen to retire in September (kcci.com) — Des Moines residents who rely on the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families will soon see a leadership change as director Dr. Eric Idehen retires in late September. After guiding the center's transition from Des Moines Area Community College to Lutheran Services in Iowa, he's stepping down while LSI launches a search for his successor.
4. Statewide Eucharistic procession coming to Davenport Diocese Sept. 19 (catholicmessenger.net) — A statewide Catholic Eucharistic procession will culminate in Des Moines Sept. 26–27, when four diocesan puzzle pieces are assembled during the Christ Our Life Conference. Before that, the procession visits St. Patrick Parish in Iowa City on Sept. 19 and other Iowa sites, inviting participants to publicly express their faith and sign their diocese's puzzle piece.
5. Remains of Iowa soldier killed in Korean War return home after 76 years (kcci.com) — The remains of U.S. Army Sgt. Max Ramsey, an Iowa soldier killed in the Korean War nearly 76 years ago, are returning through Des Moines International Airport before he is buried in Unionville, Missouri. A public procession route will be announced so people can line the way with American flags to honor his final journey home.
