Des Moines neighborhood hit by storm damage on 11th and Carpenter (kcci.com) — Neighbors near 11th and Carpenter in Des Moines woke up to downed trees, blocked roads, and damaged yards and roofs after powerful overnight storms. Residents described scrambling to shelter, moving cars just in time, and worrying about school buses navigating debris as cleanup begins across the affected blocks.
2. 2 arrested in connection with gunfire incident near Des Moines schools, police say (who13.com) — Police arrested two men Wednesday after a nine-minute chase through Des Moines in a car linked to gunfire and bullet casings found near Des Moines Public School campuses. Officers used a drone, K-9, and license plate readers to track the stolen vehicle, recover a discarded handgun, and file felony theft and eluding charges as the investigation continues.
3. Polk County funds cold case investigative unit as 130 cases remained unsolved (who13.com) — Polk County leaders are funding a dedicated cold case unit to tackle roughly 130 unsolved homicides and missing-person cases affecting families in and around Des Moines. Five part-time investigators will now be paid to re-examine evidence, use new DNA and forensic tools, and coordinate with state agencies to push long-stalled cases toward resolution.
4. Iowa sailor welcomed home after nearly a year at sea (kcci.com) — A Des Moines Navy sailor is back home after more than 250 days at sea aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, reuniting with loved ones at Des Moines International Airport. Friends and family gathered to celebrate his safe return and reflect on the long months without contact, before he heads back to continue his service in California.
5. Hampton-Dumont Teacher Named 2026 Iowa Art Educator of the Year (radioonthego.com) — Art teachers from across Iowa will gather in Des Moines on October 2 when Hampton-Dumont educator Nicole Nelson is honored as the 2026 Iowa Art Educator of the Year. Her statewide recognition highlights Des Moines' role as a hub for arts education events and professional conferences that bring teachers and students into the city.
