Recovery nonprofit opens new Des Moines center after rapid growth (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — Full Circle Recovery has opened a new standalone Recovery Community Center on Douglas Avenue in Des Moines, bringing multiple peer-led addiction support programs under one roof. The nonprofit, which has already served tens of thousands statewide, now offers local residents expanded recovery events, coaching, and post-overdose support in a more accessible, dedicated space.
2. 25 years later: How Iowa teachers continue educating students about 9/11 (wqad.com) — Des Moines Lincoln High School seniors are learning about 9/11 through expanded, discussion-based lessons that go far beyond a single memorial day. Iowa teachers, including one 9/11 Memorial & Museum fellow, are asking students to collect family stories and explore historical context so a tragedy they didn't live through remains meaningful for the next generation.
3. 21-mile walk from Waukee to Iowa Capitol honors lives lost on 9/11 (weareiowa.com) — A 21-mile remembrance walk from Waukee to the Iowa Capitol brought participants into Des Moines to honor lives lost on 9/11, with a Des Moines firefighter helping lead the effort. Local students watched the final stretch at the Capitol, connecting classroom lessons about Sept. 11 with a living tribute happening in their own community.
4. ARL of Iowa rescues 141 animals across three massive operations (who13.com) — The Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Des Moines is caring for 141 animals after three major rescue operations across the state in about a week. With dogs, horses, and dozens of sick cats now filling its care, the shelter is asking central Iowa residents for support to help these animals recover and keep future rescues possible.
5. 42-year-old Waukee football coach back to sidelines after recovering from stroke (who13.com) — A Waukee football coach who suffered a severe stroke in May was rushed to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, where quick treatment helped him avoid a typically deadly outcome. After intensive rehab, he's back on the sidelines and urging central Iowans to recognize stroke symptoms and seek immediate care.
