Des Moines program offers homeowners rebates for plumbing and drainage improvements (kcci.com) — Des Moines homeowners can now tap a city rebate program to help pay for sump pumps, backflow preventers, and other plumbing upgrades that protect basements from sewer backups after heavy rains. The Private Property Protection Program reimburses 100% of the first $1,500 for eligible projects within city limits and has already helped hundreds of residents reduce flooding risks.
   

4. 'Not a decision we want to make': Des Moines Public Library eliminating Sunday hours due to cuts (weareiowa.com) — Des Moines residents will lose Sunday access to Central Library and Franklin Avenue Library starting in November as part of $750,000 in budget cuts tied to a wider city shortfall. Library leaders say the move helps avoid deeper reductions, but acknowledge it will make it harder for some patrons to use essential services and are urging residents to stay engaged in budget talks.
   

5. Afro-Latino Festival comes to Iowa Central (messengernews.net) — Des Moines residents are featured prominently in Iowa Central's Afro-Latino Festival, with a local Mexican-American dance troupe and a Des Moines Spanish teacher helping anchor the celebration. The Fort Dodge event, timed with National Hispanic Heritage Month, drew hundreds to explore Afro-Latino food, music, and culture, highlighting Iowa's growing Hispanic community and strong connections to central Iowa cities like Des Moines and Ames.
