1. Des Moines flood prevention rebate offers up to $1,500 (holaamericanews.com) — Des Moines property owners can now get reimbursed up to $1,500 for approved plumbing upgrades that help prevent sewer backups and flooding, but you must apply before work begins. The city's Private Property Protection Program covers eligible sump pumps, backwater valves, and roof drain disconnections at existing properties, with applications accepted through June 1, 2028 and work completed by licensed plumbers under city permits.
2. Iowa expands nitrogen soil sampling project (hpj.com) — Farmers in counties feeding into the Des Moines metro area can now access expanded free nitrogen soil testing through Iowa's Nitrogen Soil Sampling Project. After strong demand last spring, the state and INREC are doubling capacity for fall 2026 and adding all 22 Greater Des Moines watershed counties, helping local producers fine-tune fertilizer decisions and protect water quality.
3. Iowa Latino Heritage Festival 2026: Hours and Parking (holaamericanews.com) — Downtown Des Moines will host Iowa's Latino Heritage Festival Sept. 26-27 at Western Gateway Park, featuring live music, dance, food and children's activities. Admission is $5 for adults and free for kids 12 and under, with free parking available at Nationwide's ramp and free street parking on Sunday, plus a full lineup of bands, cultural booths and family-friendly fun.
4. Private, public universities develop medical science doctoral programs (kcrg.com) — Des Moines University is now taking applications for Iowa's first online Doctor of Medical Science degree, aimed at experienced physician assistants seeking leadership and education roles. The four-term, fully online program lets students choose concentrations in health education, public health, or administration, while the University of Iowa prepares to launch a similar doctorate in January.
5. Gas prices jump again in Des Moines as diesel climbs even faster (who13.com) — Des Moines drivers are now paying an average of $4.32 per gallon for regular gas, about 19 cents more than last week and $1.44 more than a year ago. Prices vary widely across the metro, with nearly a dollar difference between the cheapest and most expensive stations, while diesel and statewide averages are also hitting record or near-record highs.
