1. Free Des Moines voiceover conference set for Oct. 10 (holaamericanews.com) — Young creatives in Des Moines can sign up now for a free voiceover and creative careers conference on Oct. 10 at Mainframe Studios, 900 Keosauqua Way. The event, led by award-winning local artist Jessica Trinidad and industry guests, offers hands-on coaching, audition tips, and live practice, with advance registration required because space is limited.
2. Polk County approves grant for Grays Woods Recovery Center expansion (weareiowa.com) — Polk County supervisors have approved a $1 million grant, funded by opioid settlement dollars, to expand the Grays Woods Recovery Center serving Des Moines and central Iowa. The project, led by Community & Family Resources, will create a more unified campus for detox, treatment, mental health care, and long-term recovery support. Leaders say the expansion should make services easier to access and navigate.
3. Attractions in Des Moines, Jewell, Lee County win Iowa economic development funding (radioiowa.com) — Des Moines' Sleepy Hollow Sports Park is set for a major expansion after winning a $4.25 million Destination Iowa grant to add year-round skiing, snowboarding, tubing, camping, and an 18,000-square-foot lodge with a public brew pub. State tourism officials say the upgraded park could draw 200,000 visitors a year and generate over $4 million in direct spending in the Des Moines area.
4. Central Iowa residents can reserve trees through Trees Forever ahead fall planting season (weareiowa.com) — Central Iowa property owners, including those in Polk County and Des Moines, can now reserve up to five trees for $20 each through Trees Forever's fall program. Selected trees will be picked up at an Oct. 10 distribution event in Des Moines, supporting the One Million Trees Central Iowa effort to boost the region's tree canopy by 2032.
5. LIST: Pumpkin patches, corn mazes, apple orchards in central Iowa (who13.com) — Families around Des Moines can choose from several nearby pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and apple orchards opening for the fall season, many with special festivals and evening events. Options include long-standing family farms and newer metro favorites offering U-pick produce, hayrides, themed mazes, and kids' activities. Links and social pages provide hours, pricing, and updates.
