Parks and Recreation Invites Residents to Guide the Future of Historic Des Moines Park (dsm.city) — Des Moines residents are invited to help shape the future of Greenwood Park at public input sessions on Wednesday, October 7, with daytime and evening times available at the park. You'll be able to share what you value, suggest improvements, and later weigh in again on draft plans, with online feedback options and future fundraising guided by Friends of Des Moines Parks.
2. Continued rainfall helps ease Iowa drought conditions for 2nd week (amestrib.com) — Heavy September rain in Des Moines has helped ease drought conditions, with the city recording over 12 inches this month, its second-wettest September on record. Statewide, only about 12% of Iowa remains abnormally dry or in drought, an improvement from last week and last year, with the worst conditions now confined mainly to around Sioux City.

ARL of Iowa rescues 379 animals from central Iowa farm (who13.com) — Des Moines-based Animal Rescue League of Iowa has removed 379 neglected animals from a central Iowa farm, bringing many back to its Second Chance Ranch and rehabilitation center. Most were severely underfed and living in filthy, cramped conditions, and the ARL is now asking for donations to help care for the rescued animals and support its Des Moines facilities.
5. Iowa lawmakers could return for special session on steel plant tax incentives before midterms (kcrg.com) — State lawmakers may be called back to Des Moines for a special session on major tax incentives to lure a steel plant to southeast Iowa, and some Des Moines Democrats are questioning the timing just before the 2026 election. They warn the package could be very costly and potentially used to advance broader power-shifting measures, while Republican leaders and the governor's office have not publicly detailed any plan.
