Westbound I-35/80 Closures in Des Moines Begin Oct. 16 for Saylor Creek Bridge Repairs (iowadot.gov) — Expect major weekend slowdowns on westbound I-35/80 in Des Moines starting Friday night, Oct. 16, as crews repair the Saylor Creek Bridge and close multiple ramps near 2nd Avenue. Plan alternate routes using I-235, allow extra time, and check Iowa 511 for real-time updates so you're not stuck in backups during this critical maintenance work.
2. Training for snow plow driving in Des Moines begins (kcci.com) — Des Moines snowplow drivers are already training with obstacle courses to get ready for long 12‑hour shifts keeping local streets safe once snow hits. Instructors emphasize careful driving around plows, spatial awareness, and giving plow trucks plenty of room so residents can still get where they need to go during winter storms.

Iowa Homes for Heroes gives Navy veteran new home in Urbandale (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — A Navy veteran and his family just received a specially adapted home in nearby Urbandale from Iowa Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit founded by West Des Moines-based R&R Realty leaders. With support from builders and the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, the group is expanding its work to other Iowa communities while state leaders signal interest in helping it grow.
