Here are the top three stories today in Des Moines:
- The Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Iowa has rescued an additional 225 animals from an unlicensed breeder in southeast Iowa. Last month, the ARL team removed 42 dogs and 41 hamsters from the property, which reportedly had animals packed into "disgusting enclosures" with no food or water. In a Facebook post, the Des Moines-based organization asked the community for donations to fund the rescued animals' extensive medical care. (KCRG)
- This weekend, the Des Moines Symphony will welcome guest conductor Jahja Ling as he leads the orchestra in the Fifth Symphony at the Civic Center. Ling was the first and only Chinese conductor to hold a music director role with a major U.S. orchestra before his 2017 retirement. Tickets for the Saturday 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 2:30 p.m. shows, as well as live stream tickets, are available through the Des Moines Symphony website. (dsm Magazine)
- A 16-year-old is facing burglary charges after a string of car break-ins in Pleasant Hill. The juvenile was caught on Ring camera footage rummaging through multiple unlocked cars along Hillside Court. According to police, the crime is part of a larger trend of "car hopping," in which teens are attempting to enter as many unlocked cars as possible to steal valuables. (KCCI Des Moines)
