Des Moines City Hands Out Masks Stresses Need For Coronavirus Protection

DES MOINES, IOWA –Wednesday, August 13, 2020 – As the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) surpasses 50,000 positive cases statewide with more than 10,000 in Polk County, the City of Des Moines has initiated a safety campaign to provide free face coverings to residents who need them. The effort resulted from Mayor Frank Cownie’s recent emergency proclamation directing the City to purchase and distribute face coverings to keep residents safe while educating them on the benefits of masks.

Scientific studies have shown that face coverings over the mouth and nose significantly reduce the spread of the coronavirus. At least 34 states and the District of Columbia are mandating face coverings in public.

“Wearing a mask is the simplest and most effective way for all of us to reduce the spread of the virus and save lives,” Cownie said. “We can’t expect this pandemic to simply run its course, we need to take action and it starts by keeping proper distance and wearing a face covering.”

The City is distributing its initial order of 12,000 face coverings through Central Iowa Shelter & Services, DART, Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Des Moines Public Library, Blank Park Zoo, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, YMCA of Greater Des Moines as well as various community and faith-based organizations.
