Des Moines Curbside Collection Continues: Updates Residents Should Know

DES MOINES, IOWA – Monday, August 31, 2020 – The City of Des Moines Public Works Department began curbside collection of storm-related tree debris on Monday, August 17 and in just two weeks, more than 4,300 truckloads have been picked up and hauled off.

Starting today, Monday, August 31, the single-pass curbside collection will continue for those residents who have not received a visit from a Public Works crew. Piles that are set out and are compliant will be picked up. Residents can track where work has been done in the City through interactive maps.

New piles in places that have already been marked complete on the map, will not be collected.Residents either need to:

• reduce storm debris to fit regular yard waste guidelines which includes the appropriate bags and stickers,
• visit the MWA Metro Park East Landfill (12181 NE University Ave. in Mitchellville), or
• attend the City’s next SCRUB event scheduled for Saturday, September 19 from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. at the MWA Compost Center (1601 Harriett St.)

Residents also need to be aware of some changes that have been made to bulk item and appliance collection in the City. It is required that items be appropriately stickered. Residents are also required to schedule a collection by calling the Public Works 24-Hour Customer Service Center at (515) 283-4950.
