Des Moines Nominate Youth Leaders To Join Policy And Practice Review Committee

PRESS RELEASEDES MOINES, IOWA – Tuesday, July 28, 2020 – The Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations from the community for a youth leader to join the City of Des Moines’ recently created Policy and Practice Review Committee.On Monday, June 22, Des Moines City Council approved a new ordinance regarding unbiased policing. This ordinance directed the City Manager to form a Community Policing and Code Enforcement Policy and Practice Review Committee (PPRC) to review policing data and provide recommendations to improve the City’s law enforcement policies and practices.

The PPRC will consist of two members of the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission, one member from the housing appeals board, one staff member from the Community Development department, one sworn police officer, three Des Moines residents appointed by the Mayor and At-Large City Council members, and one youth member recommended by the Civil & Human Rights Commission.

The selected youth leader will provide valuable input to City leadership and help shape the future of law enforcement and neighborhood code enforcement in the City of Des Moines.
