Des Moines Suspends Sister City Relationship With Stavropol, Russia

“We face perhaps the greatest challenge between our two countries in more than a half century precipitated by the unprovoked attacked on Ukraine. This is an act of unprecedented aggression that we, as two longtime friends, cannot ignore or disregard.”

“Stavropol has been a cherished and valued friend for many years and we are hopeful that it will thrive for decades to come. Because we hold this relationship in such high esteem, we believe the future can be as bright as the past has been rewarding.”

The relationship between the Greater Des Moines Sister Cities Commission and Stavropol began on July 27, 1992. Additional Sister City relationships include Kofu, Japan; Saint-Etienne, France; Shijiazhuang, China and Pristina, Kosovo.

SISTER CITIES MISSION To enhance the global profile of the greater Des Moines metropolitan area by bridging communities and opening doors with international sister cities for mutual benefit in culture, education, technology, commerce, and economic development.
