Here are the top 3 stories in Des Moines today:
- A dog became a local hero Monday after saving her family from carbon monoxide poisoning. The dog's owner, Brad Harbert, says the family pet jumped on and off the bed repeatedly to wake him when the carbon monoxide detector's alarm began going off. Harbert was able to gather his son, father, and dog Roxy and safely evacuate them from the house before calling 911. MidAmerican Energy later determined the leak came from Harbert's electric and gas fireplace. (WKRN)
- Des Moines Public Schools have implemented a new disciplinary policy in response to increased fighting among students. Students involved in fights will now be placed into what the district calls a "behavior contract," and those with repeat offenses will be required to temporarily move to virtual learning. The new consequences follow what the district superintendent has called "a steady decline in civil discourse" that is being reflected in students' behavior. (Local 5 - weareiowa.com)
- A West Des Moines man is facing charges for intentionally ramming a vehicle while his girlfriend and child were inside. Police say the incident occurred late Sunday night on Office Park Road when 34-year-old Jasmin Suljic repeatedly struck the vehicle before fleeing on foot. The girlfriend was checked out and cleared on scene by medics and the child was transported to Blank Children's Hospital out of an abundance of caution. (WHO TV 13 Des Moines News & Weather)
