First, today's weather:

Cold; breezy in the morning. High: 41 Low: 25.

Here are the top three stories today in Des Moines:

  1. A MidAmerican Energy Co. lineman was in the right place at the right time to help a West Des Moines family escape when their home caught fire early Wednesday morning. Tom Flanery was repairing a streetlight across from 1116 Eighth St. when he noticed smoke coming from the single-story house. He immediately went across the street and began knocking loudly on the doors and windows to wake up the residents inside. Two adults, a teenager, and their pets all made it out of the home safely. 2. Four more teenagers have been charged in a Mar. 7 shooting that killed a 15-year-old victim outside of Des Moines' East High. On Tuesday, officers charged each of the teens with first-degree murder for the death of Jose David Lopez and two counts of attempted murder for the shooting of two teenage girls who survived. Six other suspects were arrested shortly after the incident with the same charges. (KQWC)
  3. Wild turkeys roaming the streets are prompting about half a dozen daily calls to the West Des Moines police from residents who are concerned about traffic obstructions. According to reports, the turkeys frequently cross Buffalo Road and begin to peck and attack stopped cars when they see their reflection on the exterior. West Des Moines animal control and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are both aware of the issue but reportedly cannot relocate the turkeys because they are considered wildlife.
