Celebrating the fruits of North Hall's garden (dailyiowan.com) — Behind North Hall on the University of Iowa campus, a student-run garden is supplying fresh produce and pollinator habitat that directly benefits Iowa City residents and students. Volunteers and sustainability staff tend the beds, host harvest celebrations, and donate extra vegetables to the Iowa Memorial Union Food Pantry, quietly turning a tucked-away space into a shared resource for food, community, and bees.
2. DVIP/RVAP events planned in Iowa City, Washington for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (cbs2iowa.com) — Iowa City residents can support Domestic Violence Awareness Month through DVIP/RVAP's Clothesline Project display on Oct. 10 at The Greenhouse and a Shop for Safety donation drive at Johnson County Hy-Vee and Fareway stores on Oct. 17. Volunteers will collect hygiene items and food for survivors using local emergency shelters and services, helping reduce everyday barriers to safety and stability.
3. A new court, same friendship (soloneconomist.com) — Two Solon seniors spent their final year of high school playing on Iowa City High's junior varsity girls tennis team, stepping into a new sport and a new community in Iowa City. With support from parents and welcoming teammates, they learned the basics, embraced mistakes, and finished a 7-1 season that strengthened both their friendship and confidence in trying unfamiliar challenges.
4. Iowa City man serving time at Cedar Rapids halfway house charged with assault (1630kcjj.com) — An Iowa City man serving time at a Cedar Rapids halfway house has been charged with assaulting another resident, based on video footage and a complaint. He's now back in Johnson County Jail on a cash-only bond and barred from returning to the facility because of a separation order involving the alleged victim.
