Back to School: Sales Tax Holiday Begins this Friday in Iowa City
Here's a heads up on the sales tax holiday as you get ready to do your back to school shopping. The tax holiday starts on Friday and extends into Saturday.

It's August, and that means Back to School Shopping (dunn, dunnn, dunnnnn) is about to begin.
Here are some things for you to remember about the sales tax holiday coming up soon, with info via the Iowa Department of Revenue:
No sales tax will be collected on select clothing and footwear Aug. 3 and Aug. 4. Any store that is open from 12 a.m. Aug. 3 to 12 a.m. Aug. 5 is required to participate.

If an item bought on the sales tax holiday is exchanged later the buyer will not have to pay taxes.
The exemption only applies to clothing and shoes that cost less than $100 per item.

There are also specific rules that govern which items are taxable and which are not. Shoes without cleats are exempt, shoes with cleats are taxable. Sunglasses are taxable, unless they are prescription.
