Tips to embrace outdoor yoga + meditation

Use these three tips to cultivate an outdoor yoga or meditation practice.

Warm weather and sunshine in Iowa City means farmers markets, an increase in bikes on the road, and the desire to get outside in the bright Midwest sun. For some, the heat is an open invitation to grab our yoga mats and meditation pillows and head to the nearest grassy spot. Outdoors can be unpredictable and buggy or it can be a true opportunity to connect to your body, breath, and nature.

Be Flexible

Ironically being flexible is more about being able to sit comfortably or touch your toes in our yoga and meditation practice especially when we are outdoors. A heavy dose of spontaneity always accompanies me when I head outdoors to breath and flow. And though most experiences are bliss, others have included bugs, passing children telling me "you're so lucky", and basketballs rolling into my yoga zone. Part of our practice is stretching yourself into new opportunities and rolling with the punches {or basketballs} as they arise.

Find the right spot

Outdoors is outdoors, right? Not necessarily! Look for a spot that is secluded, mud free, and level if you plan to add in some yoga postures. More importantly, look for a space that you can turn into an area for you to deepen your practice. The more you show up to this place, the more you will begin to associate the benefits of meditation, breath, and yoga with the area.

Commit to trying it

Beginning a yoga or meditation class can be challenging enough, without adding the element of being outdoors. But don't let yourself fall into the trap of avoiding it due to confusion, discomfort, or Iowa humidity! If it sounds intriguing, give it a try! You just might fall in love with practicing in the great outdoors!
