Gardening enthusiasts should mark their calendars: the Johnson County Master Gardeners (JCMG) will host their 17th annual Plant Sale &amp; Flea Market on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, Buildings B &amp; C.
“Gardeners won’t want to miss this opportunity to purchase beautiful, locally-grown plants for their home and garden,” said Emil Rinderspacher, sale coordinator. “The biggest draw is the selection of plants grown exclusively by Master Gardeners.”
Rinderspacher noted that volunteers spend weeks preparing for the sale. “Master Gardener volunteers plan well in advance—starting vegetables and preparing plants—making this our biggest event of the year. Hundreds of volunteer hours go into its success,” he said.
The timing is also intentional. “Holding the sale the day before Mother’s Day makes it a perfect opportunity to find a unique and meaningful gift,” he added.
Shoppers will find a wide selection of perennial flowers, vegetables, herbs, shrubs, woody plants, and a variety of flea market items. The event now spans two buildings at the fairgrounds to accommodate its growing popularity.
Flea Market Accepting Donations
The popular Flea Market features a wide assortment of reasonably priced garden-related items, including tools, plant containers, equipment, and yard art.
Community members are invited to donate gently used items. “All items must be clean and in working order,” organizers note. “We cannot accept housewares, chemicals, fertilizers, or magazines.” Accepted items include garden tools, garden décor, books, sports equipment, and household tools.
Donations may be dropped off at the north entrance of Building B at the Johnson County Fairgrounds at the following times: 
·Tuesday, May 5, from 1–4 p.m. 
·Wednesday, May 6, from 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
·Thursday, May 7, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. 
·Friday, May 8, 9 a.m.–noon
Proceeds from the event support JCMG programs and operations, as well as Kirkwood Community College horticulture scholarships and 4-H awards.
Organized in 1982, the Johnson County Master Gardeners is a volunteer-based education and service program sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Members receive horticulture training and provide research-based information, education and service for Iowa residents.
