What kinds of plants, animals, and fungi call Project GREEN Gardens home? Join us for a hands-on BioBlitz and help uncover the answer. We hope to create a dynamic experience connecting organizations and individuals committed to protecting and understanding the natural world.

Saturday, Aug. 1, 9–11 a.m.

The public is invited to explore, observe, and document biodiversity across the 8-acre garden site.

Working alongside local experts, you’ll contribute to a multi-year effort tracking how species diversity changes over time—real science happening right here in Iowa City.

Families are welcome, and all ages can participate. No experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity.

During this interactive event, participants will:
• Examine insects under professional microscopes
• Learn to identify species using the iNaturalist app
• Discover how your observations contribute to scientific research
• Learn about the collaborative vision for the gardens
• Visit numerous displays hosted by environmental and conservation groups

This collaborative effort brings together the City of Iowa City, Hills Bank, Johnson County Master Gardeners, Johnson County Planning, Development & Sustainability, Project GREEN, and the University of Iowa Office of Sustainability and the Environment to promote environmental education, stewardship, and community engagement.

BioBlitz participants are encouraged to practice a carry-in/carry-out philosophy; if you bring it in, please carry it out. And bring a reusable/refillable water bottle and adopt the initiative to avoid using single-use plastics. Everything we can do to help our environment makes a difference: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
