Coralville Inmate Charged With Assault After Allegedly Clawing Officer's Face

A Coralville man is accused of charging a correctional officer and tried "to do as much damage as physically possible."


A Coralville inmate at Iowa Medical and Classification Center has been charged with assault after allegedly clawing the face of a correctional officer in early May.

Michael W. Arterburn, 43, of Coralville charged a correctional officer and allegedly assaulted him on May 5 at approximately midnight, according to a Coralville Police criminal complaint.

Arterburn was then taken to the ground by two correctional officers, according to the complaint. Arterburn then tried to scratch at one of the officer's face, in order to "causes as much physical damage as possible," the complaint stated.

The officer received numerous bloody lacerations and scratches on his face and head, according to the complaint.

Arterburn is charged with assault causing injury to a peace officer, an aggravated misdemeanor.

According to Coralville police, this is the fifth time Arterburn has been accused of assaulting a peace officer.
