Does It Matter Whether Trump Suggested or Commanded Comey to Drop His Flynn Investigation?

When the president of the United States "suggests" to a subordinate that he do something, does it have the force of a command?

Some political analysts seem to think it makes a difference whether President Donald Trump suggested to former FBI director James Comey that he “see [his] way clear to let Flynn go,” i.e., to drop his investigation of former National Security advisor General Michael Flynn or commanded him to do it. I don’t think it makes any difference at all when you’re talking about whether the president committed obstruction of justice. When the president of the United States “suggests” to a subordinate that he do something, the suggestion could come in the form of a suggestion because the Commander-in-Chief realizes he’s doing something illegal, like obstructing justice.

However, Democrats are reportedly wary of "frogmarching Trump out of the West Wing," according to the New York Times, which might be regarded by Trump supporters as a way of overturning the election by other means. (The alternative, of course, would be to frogmarch Vladimir Putin out of the Kremlin, since the election had outside interference from a hostile foreign power.) Still, the Congressional Black Caucus, furious over the racist dog whistles from the Trump campaign and its followers, is leading the charge to impeach the president as soon as possible. In any case, the Democrats are in the minority in the House, where Articles of Impeachment would have to begin and where hearings would be held.

The Republican majority in the House would have to become sufficiently concerned about holding onto their own seats of power to consider giving President Trump his pink slip.

It's interesting that long-time Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would like to see "less drama" coming from the White House. Long-time moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said, "We can not have this constant chaos and serious questions being raised virtually every single day...The administration needs to gets its house in order."

These senators are old hands and not ones to speak with loose lips sinking ships. Cracks are developing in the Republican firewall as Trump's behavior becomes more disturbing and disruptive to the Republican legislative agenda.
