Driver Allegedly "Bottoms Out," Collides with Fence Near Wetherby Park: Iowa City Police Blotter, Feb. 26

Police accused an Iowa City man of driving while intoxicated after he allegedly bottomed out his car, violated several traffic laws, and collided with a fence.

Police say at 12:26 a.m. on Feb. 26 they responded to the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Sycamore Street for a vehicle accident. A department of corrections officer in the area on a routine patrol reported seeing the accident, according to the criminal complaint.

This officer's account: He said the driver of the vehicle had blown through two stop signs, then "bottom out" causing the undercarriage of the car to contact the street creating sparks on contact, and then, while traveling at a high speed down Sycamore Street, the driver allegedly missed the turn onto Lakeside Drive, instead colliding with a fence.

The driver, Leon Kurt Shivers, 41, of 60 Regal Lane, Iowa City, allegedly admitted alcohol prior to driving and had blood-shot eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol according to the complaint. Shivers, however, refused all intoxication tests, according to the complaint.

Shivers was also charged with driving with a suspended license and a driving with an open alcohol container violation.
