Spectral Gender: the roles that men and women may play within a society and a household vary dramatically by region, religion, class, and tradition, and gender difference have been a fertile literary ground for millenia. In an increasingly connected world, assumptions about such roles are rapidly coming into conflict with one another. Is gender an entirely social construct, or does it make sense to correlate it to different aptitudes, abilities, and temperaments? And are writers inevitably on the forefront of change, or need they also speak for tradition in this regard?
The International Authors program series provides an opportunity for the community to meet and converse with Writers in Residence from around the world at the UI International Writing Program.
