After submitting my first photo assignment as a contributor for the newly launched news media site, Iowa City Patch; editor Stephen Schmidt asked me if I would be interested in doing a daily photo blog. I agreed and Iowa City 365 Project was born.

The assignment was to take a picture everyday for the next year and submit the photo as an article on the Iowa City Patch website. The general rule was to snap the image in Iowa City, but the photo could be of whatever I wanted. Day 1 started on June 15, 2011 with a picture of a bicycle and it’s shadow parked near the Iowa City Rec Center. The images that followed covered everything from sunsets, nature, random objects, public art, architecture, landmarks, businesses, events, and the people of Iowa City.

My approach is simple. Carry my camera with me everywhere I go and see what inspires me. Iowa City has a lot to offer, but I have to look around to keep my daily photo fresh and interesting, which motivates me as an artist. The images not only reflect the simple abundant beauty of Iowa City, but are also a reflection of my personal experiences; where I was at the time, what I noticed and what I chose to capture.

By appreciating this town through my images, I have witnessed the Iowa City community appreciate the project in return. I am nearly to the halfway point and the response has been tremendous. People from all walks of life who have a connection to Iowa City have personally shared their positive feedback about the project with me via email, Facebook or in person and have encouraged me to keep up the great work! Having a solid public platform to express my self as an artist and to receive this kind of exposure as a photographer in my own community is priceless.
