On election day, Tuesday, June 3, 2014, fire Janet Lyness and vote for John Zimmerman instead. Lyness is not only partisan and selective in who she decides to file charges against and how much effort she puts into prosecuting some defendants over others, she's incompetent, as she proved in the botched murder case with Charles Thompson as the defendant. The victim was a Broadway Street landlord, John Versypt. The Thompson case ended in a mistrial because Lyness introduced evidence that the judge had disallowed in advance. So the judge declared a mistrial.
In early 2010, former ICCSD physical plant director Paul Schultz brought a gun to the physical plant office in what 12 physical plant employees at the time described as a very hostile work environment. Not only did the school district fail to discipline him, though he was eventually fired due to public pressure for countless other misdeeds, but Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness offered a specious legal argument for not charging him. Given Schultz's temperament, the results could have been tragic.
How does everyone feel about a Johnson County Attorney who looked the other way when a district employee brought a gun to his school district workplace during school hours in a building that high school students had access to?
Lyness made a spurious distinction between "school" property where classes are in session and "school district" property, where classes are not in session, even though she was informed that home-building classes occurred on site and students were allowed to enter the building during school hours to pick up materials and equipment and use the bathroom.
Patti Fields, then an ICCSD board member as she is now, admitted that an employee brought a gun to work at school but refused to say who. In Iowa law it is a felony to bring guns onto school grounds.
All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for enough good [people] to do nothing. --Edmund Burke
