GALLERY: Iowa City Regina Thwomps Solon 35-9.
Regal fans had plenty to cheer about Friday night, as they saw their home squad take advantage of Solon miscues to knife through the Spartan defense for multiple scores.
The last year's class 3A champion Solon took on last year's class 2A champion, Iowa City Regina, last night, and judging from the results only one of the team currently looks like it will be a threat to repeat as champs. Iowa City Regina won the home game over the habitual champion Solon Spartans 35-9.
Although Solon moved the ball on Regina, costly mistakes cost the Spartans again and again, and the Regals were more than happy to take advantage of the opportunity. The Regina offense pumped out several long touchdown plays, taking a 21-3 lead to half time despite a large time of possession advantage for Solon.
Solon looked like it might make a game of it after scoring on the opening drive of the second half, but key penalties and big plays by Regina shut the door on that again, and the Regals had the game mostly salted away with 3/4 of the fourth quarter remaining.
