ICCSD Plans to Close North Liberty Trail

Supt. Steve Murley of the Iowa City Community School District will close the North Liberty Trail for construction of the new high school.

Iowa City Community School District Superintendent Steve Murley plans to close the North Liberty Trail from Iowa City to North Liberty along North Dubuque Street in order to complete the new high school near North Liberty. Given the pace of construction at Penn Elementary (construction mess visible at Penn, but little to no progress made so far), I shudder to think how long the trail might be closed. To take another example, look at the Crandic Trail in Coralville. The Crandic Trail has been closed for years, and God only knows when or if it will ever reopen. Construction there has been monumentally slow, although progress is now occurring.

Since the Johnson County Board of Supervisors has received many complaints and queries about the proposed closing of the North Liberty Trail along Dubuque Street, board chairman Pat Harney queried Supt. Murley about the need to disrupt transportation on and near the trail. He has asked to be kept informed of plans affecting the trail. His letter to Murley can be found here:
