Investigators Continue Digging into Iowa City Bruegger's Fire Cause
Dealing with a great degree of rubble and other obstructions, investigators pressed on in attempting to ascertain the cause of the fire that damaged three downtown Iowa City buildings a week and a half ago.

The cause for the Iowa City has not been determined yet, but that isn't for lack of trying.
Today, investigators from both the Iowa City Fire Department and private companies looked through the rubble to try to investigate the cause of the fire and extent of the damages, which investigators are now putting at more than a million dollars. An overnight fire caused millions of dollars in damage to downtown Iowa City last month. Iowa City fire Marshal John Grier said he isn’t ready to give an exact amount, but estimated the total destruction to be far greater than anything he’s seen in his four years as fire marshal.

“A lot of properties have damage,” Grier said. “So right now safety is the big key.”
According to a press release from the , after the investigation today, an excavation and access plan was being developed that would work for all parties and equipment is being procured that will allow this plan to be executed.

Investigation is set to continue on Friday morning, with the scene examination hopefully completed by next week, according to the release.
