The cicadas are singing, the kids are back in school, and the air is getting (gradually) a bit cooler. It's time for the return of high school football.
Three Iowa City high school football teams kick off their seasons tonight. City High host Dubuque Senior, West plays at Waterloo East and Regina heads to Brooklyn to meet up with BGM.
Here's a short preview of what you can expect and where they'll be. Tune in to Iowa City Patch later for scores and more coverage of the home openers.
Dubuque Senior at City High: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field in Iowa City.
Although these teams both start at (0-0) they couldn't be more opposite in terms of last year's records. Dubuque Senior is coming off a zero win season, while City High finished last year with just one loss. Look for Jasper Washington of City High in his transition from receiver to quarterback.
Iowa City West at Waterloo East: 7:15 p.m. Friday in Waterloo.
In a battle of directional schools, West High heads North to take on East in this matchup of squads who finished toward the end of the middle of the back last season. West High wants to improve on its (4-6) record last year led by talented quarterback Charles Rogers.
Iowa City Regina at BGM: 7 p.m. Friday in Brooklyn.
Regina had a perfect season last year, not only winning the state championship but also giving 3A powerhouse Solon its only loss of the year. The Regals will start their march to try to match perfection tonight. Stellar Regal quarterback Jack Verducci is just one of the standouts lost from last year's squad, but that just means it's time for this year's crew to make a name for itself. Nate Streb gets the go at his first start at quarterback tonight.
