Iowa City Landfill Fire Now Covered, Landfill Open to Public

Stir, burn, and cover is now complete, and the city says it is moving on to next steps when it comes to fire containment.

The City of Iowa City said in a media release today that it has completed operation, covering 7.5 acres of still burning rubber with clay soil. The is now open to the public after being closed for due to blowing smoke.

As a result, the giant black plume of smoke is expected to be no more, although some flare ups could generate mini plumes from time to time until the fire is completely extinguished.

The city has indicated that the fire is still expected to burn for several days, and the Iowa City Fire Department will no focus on containing the other nearby cells so the fire does not spread and putting out any flare outs.
