Iowa City Man Accused of Public Intox After He Allegedly Took Flags From Cemetery on Memorial Day

The man, who claimed he was a veteran, had allegedly gathered 25 flags before he was stopped by police.


An Iowa City man was arrested and charged with public intoxication after police accused him of taking flags from the on Memorial Day.

Police were called to the cemetery at 3:00 a.m. Monday morning for the report of a man stealing flags from the cemetery. According to the police report, officers found Michelle DuBois Touchette, 53, there holding roughly 25 flags taken from the cemetery display honoring deceased soldiers for Memorial Day.

Police reported Touchette was unintelligible when first interviewed by police, but he eventually expressed to them that he was a veteran and there we no flags for him. The officers explained that living veterans get Veteran's Day, according to the complaint.

Touchette blew a .161 blood-alcohol content following his arrest, according to police.
